Impacted tooth Etobicoke
An impacted tooth is a dental condition where a tooth is obstructed as it tries to push through the gum and erupt into the mouth. This frequently occurs with wisdom teeth, also known as third molars.
Wisdom teeth typically begin to emerge between the ages of 17 and 21. These molars can become impacted due to limited space within the mouth. Sometimes, a wisdom tooth may attempt to emerge at an angle or become tilted within the jaw.
Impacted teeth may or may not cause pain. In some cases, individuals may not even be aware of their presence. However, when an impacted wisdom tooth attempts to erupt, the gum flap covering it can become infected and swollen, leading to discomfort. Pain may also radiate to nearby teeth or even the ear on the affected side of the face.
If left untreated, an impacted tooth can result in a condition called pericoronitis, which is characterized by infection. This infection can potentially spread to the throat or neck, and severe cases may require hospitalization and surgical intervention.
In addition to infections, impacted teeth are at risk of developing cavities. An impacted tooth can exert pressure on adjacent molars, which may lead to tooth displacement, decay, or gum disease. It can also affect the alignment of your teeth. In rare instances, impacted teeth can give rise to cysts or other growths in the jaw.
