Am I a Candidate for Dentures?

Perhaps the most famous patient to ever wear Dentures is, of course, George Washington. We have all heard that he wore Dentures made of wood. However, the ones worn during his presidency were hippopotamus and elephant ivory held together with gold springs. Historians have found evidence of Denture use dating back to 7th century BC in northern Italy; these partial dentures were made out of human or other animal teeth and fastened together with gold bands. The construction of Dentures has come a long way since those early days, and today's dentures are made of acrylic and are made two different ways.
At Village Dental, is your local Etobicoke dentist we pride ourselves on customer care. We will conduct an extensive oral exam to determine the best treatment option for you.

How are Dentures Made?

Conventional Dentures can be formed after all teeth have been removed and the gums have healed. Immediate Dentures are fabricated and implanted directly after teeth extraction and allowing tissues to heal under the Denture. The Upper Denture is made from acrylic and usually flesh colored and covers the roof of the mouth. Lower Dentures are molded like a horseshoe and leave room for the tongue. Teeth are either made of plastic, porcelain or a mixture of both. Dentures are also made to fit over endodontically treated teeth, and a complete Denture can be attached to dental implants allowing for a more secure fitting of the appliance. Our knowledgeable dentists at Village Dental will discuss which of these methods fit your needs best.

You May Need Dentures if:

  • You do not see a dentist regularly. Maintaining semiannual visits can detect early issues and prevent the loss of teeth.
  • Red, swollen, tending or bleeding gums. These are early signs of gum disease which directly leads to tooth loss.
  • Shifting, loose, or even gaps that seem wider in teeth can be a sign of bone loss from gum disease.
  • Severe toothaches may be a sign that decay in your tooth has progressed to the nerve in the center of your tooth. If caught early decay can be treated with a filling, but advanced decay can lead to a root canal or extraction.
  • If you are already missing more than two or three teeth, it might be wise to get some denture. More pressure on the remaining teeth could lead to more tooth loss.
  • You are self-conscious about smiling. In some instances, patients choose dentures as an anesthetic choice.
  • Difficulty eating hard or chewy foods, problems with chewing may be caused by a cracked tooth, missing teeth, cavities or gum disease. Catching the problem early will save your tooth, but without regular dental exams, you could lose it.

If you think that any of these scenarios might apply to you, contact Village Dental today, conveniently located in Etobicoke. Remember besides extreme health issues there is no reason why people should lose their teeth today. However, if you are neglecting them by skipping regular dental visits, not flossing or brushing regularly, you are putting yourself at a high risk for tooth loss.
